Made-to-measure staircases
Basement staircases
A basement flat needs a way in that does not eat the whole front garden. We design steel stairs that go down in the smallest footprint the regulations allow, with railings that keep everyone safe at the top.

Down, not across
Most basement stairs are a single straight flight or a quarter-turn with a small landing, set against the lightwell wall so the courtyard below stays usable. We keep the rise comfortable, fit a handrail on the wall side and guard the top with railings and, where needed, a gate.
Water and light
Open grating treads let daylight down into the basement and let rain through to the drain rather than onto the steps. Galvanising means the stair sits happily in the damp environment of a lightwell for decades.
Working in town
Basement stairs are usually in terraced streets with no rear access. We make the stair in sections that can be carried through the hallway or lifted over the front railings, fit in a day, and take the old timber or concrete stair away with us.
Questions we are asked about Basement staircases
Can you fit railings around the lightwell at the same time?
Yes, and it is the usual way to do it. Stair, top railings and gate come from the same drawing and match exactly.
How steep can a basement staircase be?
Domestic stairs are limited to a 42 degree pitch by the regulations. Where the run is very short we sometimes use a slightly wider tread with an open riser to keep within that.
