Wire infill balustrade

Horizontal stainless cables between posts give a balustrade that almost disappears, at a fraction of the price of glass. It suits decks, garden stairs and modern interiors.

Concrete stair with satin steel guarding, horizontal rail infill and a round handrail

    How it is made

Steel or stainless posts, a handrail on top, and 4 or 5 mm stainless cables tensioned through the posts with swaged fittings at each end. The cables are spaced so a 100 mm sphere cannot pass, and tensioned so they cannot be pushed apart.

    Where it suits

Decking and garden stairs where you want to keep the view of the planting, loft and mezzanine edges in a modern interior, and coastal houses where glass would need constant cleaning.

    Building Regulations and wire

Horizontal wires can be climbed, so the regulations restrict their use in domestic settings where the stair may be used by children. We will tell you whether wire is appropriate for your location and suggest vertical bar or glass where it is not.

Questions we are asked about Wire infill balustrade

Do the cables sag over time?

Properly tensioned stainless cable holds its tension for years. We supply a tensioning tool and can re-tension on request.

Can wire infill be fitted to existing posts?

Sometimes, if the posts are strong enough to take the end loads. Usually we replace the end posts and reuse the intermediate ones.
