Glass balustrade
Glass keeps the view, the light and the sense of space, and modern toughened and laminated glass keeps people safe while it does so. We fit it framed, on posts, or frameless in a channel.

Three ways to hold the glass
Framed: the glass sits in a steel or aluminium frame, the most robust and the most economical outdoors. Post-mounted: glass panels clamped between stainless or steel posts, the usual choice on stairs and balconies. Frameless: the glass stands in a floor channel with no posts at all, for a completely clear edge. Each is on its own page here.
The glass itself
Toughened glass is standard; laminated toughened glass is used where the regulations or the location require that a broken panel stays in place. Thickness depends on the panel size and the load, typically 10 to 21.5 mm. Clear, low-iron, tinted, frosted and satin finishes are all available.
Cleaning and living with it
Outdoor glass needs an occasional wash and nothing else. We fit panels with a small gap to the floor so leaves and rain do not collect, and use stainless or coated fittings that will not stain the glass.
Questions we are asked about Glass balustrade
Is glass balustrade safe with children?
Yes. Toughened glass is several times stronger than ordinary glass and shatters into small blunt pieces if it ever breaks. Laminated glass stays in one piece.
Does a glass balustrade need a handrail?
On stairs, yes, in most cases. On balconies and landings a frameless glass balustrade can be designed without a top rail using laminated glass.
