Spiral staircases made in East Grinstead
If the space is too tight for a straight flight, a spiral climbs a storey in a circle little bigger than a dining table. Back gardens, balconies, roof terraces and hallways all get them from us.
Comfort comes from the diameter
A 1.2 metre spiral is fine for occasional access to a roof. For a stair you will use every day, 1.4 to 1.6 metres gives a tread you can put your whole foot on. We choose the tread count so that every riser comes out identical and check the headroom where the stair passes under the floor above.
Left or right
A spiral turns one way or the other, and the correct hand depends on the position of the door at the top and the direction you step off at the bottom. We look at that on site and draw both options if it is not obvious.
Finish and fixing
Outside, the spiral is galvanised and usually powder coated black or anthracite. Inside, it can be painted or left as bare steel with timber treads. Either way it arrives in sections, is assembled around its centre column and bolted to a pad at the bottom and the landing at the top, normally in a day.
Questions we are asked about Spiral staircases
Can a spiral staircase be the sole stair serving a room?
It depends on the room and on the size of the spiral. BS 5395-2 is the standard Approved Document K names for spirals, and we check your room against it when we survey. As a guide from our own work, 1.2 m suits occasional access and 1.4 to 1.6 m suits daily use.
Can a spiral be a fire escape?
In some cases, where the building type and the number of people allow it. We will tell you whether yours qualifies.
