Made-to-measure staircases
Fire escape staircases for Sussex flats and workplaces
A fire escape is the one stair that has to satisfy everybody: the fire risk assessor, building control, the insurer and the people who will one day use it in the dark. We design to the standard, and we give you the paperwork to prove it.

Who needs one
Maisonettes over shops whose internal stair lands inside the shop. Houses in multiple occupation coming up for licensing. Surgeries, nurseries and offices that need a second way down from the first floor. Function rooms above pubs. And every building where the Victorian iron escape has finally been condemned.
What compliant means
Compliance is a list, and every item of it appears on the drawing: a clear width sized to the occupancy, rise and going inside the Approved Document limits, guarding with no foothold in it, handrails on both sides when the width demands them, grip treads, and a landing outside every door that opens on to it. The fixings go into structure that has been checked, and the flight keeps its distance from any unprotected window it passes.
Landlords and managing agents
Tenants stay in place while we work, access is arranged through you or the block manager, and the paperwork you need for the file, drawings, method statement and handover pack, is issued at handover. Survey, drawing, making, galvanising, coating and fitting are all inside the one figure.
Questions we are asked about Fire escape staircases
Do fire escape staircases need planning permission?
External escape stairs on commercial and residential buildings usually do, and always in a conservation area. We supply the application drawings.
Can you inspect and repair an existing fire escape?
Yes. We report on its condition, replace treads, guarding or fixings where that is sensible, and tell you honestly when it is time to replace it.
