Made-to-measure staircases

Garden staircases for sloping Sussex gardens

The Weald is hilly, and a lot of local gardens drop away from the house in a way that a few slabs cannot cope with. A steel garden stair turns that slope into a route you will actually use.

Grey powder-coated garden steps, star-pattern punched treads, gabion wall alongside

    Where garden steps go

Down from a raised terrace or balcony to the lawn. Between two levels of decking. From a kitchen door to a sunken patio. Alongside a retaining wall where a ramp would take too much room. We design the stair to the levels on site, with a landing wherever the run is long enough to need one.

    Materials that suit a garden

Galvanised steel with open treads lets light and rain through, so plants beneath keep growing and the stair never puddles. Powder coating in black or dark grey makes the steel disappear against planting. Matching railings along the terrace edge and a gate at the top are simple to add, since we make them alongside the stair.

    Fitted without wrecking the lawn

Garden stairs arrive as one or two pieces, are carried through the side access and bolted to a small concrete pad and to the wall or deck at the top. A day's work for most gardens, and we leave the beds as we found them.

Questions we are asked about Garden staircases

Can you make the garden stair match my balcony?

Yes. Balcony, stair and railings are often one order, made together so the bar spacing, handrail and colour are identical.

    Are open steel treads slippery?

Grating and chequer plate treads are among the least slippery outdoors because water drains straight through them. Both are used on public fire escapes for that reason.
